En relación con lo anterior; los productos químicos o peligrosos son todo tipo de material orgánico e inorgánico que puede estar presente como elemento o compuesto puro, o como mezcla o combinación de los anteriores; que se pueden encontrar en estado solido, liquido, o gaseoso que por sus características físicas , químicas, o biológicas pueden ocasionar daños a los seres humanos, al medio ambientes y a los bienes.

Los productos químicos peligrosos son cualquier compuesto o mezcla que reacciona en condiciones optimas de inflamabilidad, reactividad o explosividad. En tanto que es así, nunca se debe suponer que un producto químico es seguro; ya que la mayoría de ellos aún cuando se manejan adecuadamente pueden representar un riesgo para la seguridad y salud de los trabajadores o para el medio ambiente.

Los productos químicos han sido los causantes de accidentes leves y graves en los trabajadores de diferentes organizaciones; ya que estos pueden ingresar por diferentes vías al organismo, dentro de ellos las vías respiratorias, la vía dérmica, por contacto con las manos , por medios acuosos como los ojos, entre otras. Lo anterior como causa de malos hábitos de manipulación o condiciones de almacenamiento inadecuadas , que facilitan la presencia de los productos en sus diferentes estados ( líquido, sólido y gaseoso) en el ambiente.

Por último , es necesario hablar de las consecuencias que trae al ambiente puesto que como cambian fácilmente de estado, llegan directamente o por medios de transporte como el viento, a los componentes ambientales como los son el físico, el biótico y el social, en donde con una mínima cantidad destruyen la fauna , la flora o hasta el ecosistema completo.
